Tom Schmid, the zoo’s new president and chief executive officer, said Monday’s decision was disappointing but the zoo was “moving forward”. The refusal in October of accreditation from the association, considered the nation’s top zoo accrediting body, was a blow to the county’s second-largest zoo. However, with the loss of its species survival and breeding programs, the zoo said it “will impact species conservation programmes.” The Ohio attorney general’s office is also in the process of reviewing the zoo.Įarlier, zoo officials said the ruling would not affect the zoo’s operations nor the visitor experience. The accreditation team said it was concerned about the zoo’s animal programs department and the unethical business practices of former management. Therefore, zoos are not allowed to apply for accreditation before September. On Monday, the zoo said the board of directors for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums denied its “strong appeal” to have the certificate reinstated or postpone the matter until next year. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium was barred from participating in the species’ survival and breeding programs after losing an appeal for loss of certification.
